If your household is anything like mine, you have an abundance of old jars lying around 'just-in-case'.
I love jars as they keep products well protected & sterile, & there are lots of ways you can upcycle them to continue their use – because glass packaging that ends up in landfill is BAD NEWS.
Keen to put your collected glass jars to good use? Here are some creative ideas, some which would make excellent Christmas gifts!
1. MAKEUP & BEAUTY STORAGE
Store cotton balls, cotton buds, makeup brushes etc. I use coconut oil to wash my face, so keeping it in a little jar next to my toothpaste saves me two trips to the kitchen each day (I have a big tub in the kitchen I use for cooking).
2. SINGLE SERVE DESSERT CONTAINERS
Old jars are perfect for making single serve desserts. Yum!
Check with the manufacturer first, but in some cases jars can even go in the oven for baking. I have checked with the supplier of Camille Co. glass & the jars can go in the oven up to 220˚ c (without the lid of course) - I will be trying out various single serve cooked desserts in the near future, so stay tuned.
3. COCKTAIL HOUR DRINKING JARS
You may recall a recipe on the Ginger Love blog post a few weeks back for a Fresh Ginger, Orange & Mint drink - the vessels in the photo were Camille Co. candle jars.
I have seen jars used as drinking vessels at plenty of summer weddings & at a few bars. It is a unique way of serving up some delicious cocktails.
4. UPCYCLED FLOWER VASES
Why not use jars in place of a vase? The Camille Co. jars are particularly handy for those short-stemmed blooms picked straight from the garden.
5. PANTRY STORAGE
Jars make excellent food storage containers. They're robust, airtight & clear (so you can see the food).
If you're a bit OCD like me & you like your pantry to be organised, colour coded, matching & in descending order of height, jars are perfect. We recommend Camille Co. & old Maccona coffee jars.
6. REPURPOSED TEA LIGHT HOLDERS
Here’s a cool idea - you can turn your old candles into new candles! Place tea lights in your old vessels & style your outdoor area this summer to create a beautiful evening glow. Keep the lid & you can close them up over night to keep them protected from any rain.
7. NEW HOME FOR A SUCCULENT
Glass jars are the perfect house for all kinds of succulents. They are a low maintenance plant that adds a touch of outdoors to your indoors, & as a bonus - they make EXCELLENT Christmas gifts.
7. KIDS ROOM STORAGE & ORGANISATION
Organise your little one's room by separating out their little toys & keeping them in old jars (especially those tiny bits of Lego). If you have some old toys lying at the bottom of the toybox, you could glue them to the lids to help distinguish what goes where.
Do you have any ideas for how to reuse some of your old jars? I would love to hear from you so please feel free to comment & share with other readers.
